Hamilton And Waikato Area
The region of Waikato is famous for the underground limestone caves of the Waitomo area. Above ground, the sun shines down on the Waikato River, which winds through the lush and beautiful green hills and undulating farmland of this beautiful region.
Situated between Auckland, Tauranga, and Rotorua, Waikato is worth the drive out. It offers beautiful gardens and parks, fine dining galore, and a lot of attractions and a deep culture to explore. The local zoo at Hamilton, for example, offers children and adults alike the chance to learn more about the native birds of New Zealand – as well as other wildlife in the area. It is home to the largest free-flight aviary in the Southern Hemisphere, so it’s definitely the place to be if you love birds.
If you’re a fan of Lord of the Rings then you owe it to yourself to visit the Green Dragon Inn at “Hobbiton”; the set still stands near Matamata. Lake Karapiro is the home of the New Zealand gold medalist rowing squads, while the nearby Cambridge is the home of the equestrian industries of New Zealand. The Avantidrome is home to World Class Cycling too. There’s a lot of sports excellence to be found in Waikato.
